RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The men's track and field program at the University of Rio Grande left no doubt on the new team to beat in track and field in the River States Conference.
After winning the indoor title by almost 200 points in Marietta in February, the RedStorm dominated on their home course, winning the 2025 River States Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship by more than 160 points. Rio Grande's 286 points more than doubled any other team in the field, with Shawnee State and IU East tying for second with 123 points.
The leader of Rio Grande's dominance was sprinter Troy Mason, who came within .08 seconds of the gold standard for a sprinter. The sophomore from Grenville, Grenada won the 200 meter and 400 meter races, and took the bronze in the 100 meters, less than a tenth of a second behind teammate Daunevyn Woodson. For his efforts, Mason was honored as the 2025 River States Conference Track Athlete of the Year.
Tyler Jenkins also won a pair of gold medals in Rio Grande, claiming the victory in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races. Kasy Science added to Rio Grande's dominance in the running events, winning the gold in the 800 meters. Of the eleven track events held, the RedStorm won six. Rio Grande also claimed victory in the 4x100 and 4x800 meter relays. After leading the RedStorm to the win, Rio Grande's Matt Paxton won Coach of the Year honors, an accolade he also earned during the indoor season.
The two other individual awards handed out went to athletes from Shawnee State University. Alan Austin was honored as the 2025 Field Athlete of the Year following wins in both the javelin and the discus. The 2025 Newcomer of the Year was Luke Rader, who was the top jumper in attendance with wins in the long jump and the triple jump.
Following a number of last chance events, athletes from around the conference will turn their attention to the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held again this year on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. Qualifying athletes will be announced in May, with action in the Hoosier State set to begin on May 21 and continue through May 23.
