River States Players of the Week - March 31-April 6

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - The River States Conference is pleased to announce the Player of the Week honorees for the past week.

All awards represent contests played from Monday, March 31 through Sunday, April 6.

Men's Volleyball Players of the Week

Attacker of the Week
Jacob Whyte, Cumberland | Gr. - Outside Hitter - Lockport, Illinois
Whyte helped Cumberland to a pair of key RSC victories, as the Phoenix locked up a home game in the upcoming River States Conference Tournament. The grad student logged a kill on 38 of his 64 swings in victories over Oakland City and Brescia, good for an attack percentage of .531 and a kills per set mark of 5.43.

Setter of the Week
Abdallah Roshdy, Cumberland | Fr. - Setter - Cairo, Egypt
Roshdy ran the Cumberland offense efficiently as the Phoenix picked up two needed conference wins over Oakland City and Brescia. The freshman logged 43 assists across four sets in a victory over Oakland City on Friday, then added 40 assists in three sets as the Phoenix swept Brescia on Saturday.

Defender of the Week
Yammiel Martinez, St. Mary-of-the-Woods | Jr. - Middle Hitter - Bayamon, Puerto Rico
Martinez recorded 17 total blocks in a pair of games at No. 13 Campbellsville and No. 13 Georgetown The junior started the week with nine total blocks at Campbellsville with two solos and seven assists and came back with eight at Georgetown including three block solos. He also added six kills and three digs and scored 17.0 points on the week.

Baseball Players of the Week

Player of the Week
Kendric Sorgius, Oakland City | So. - Outfielder - Petersburg, Indiana
Sorgius had a hit in all four of Oakland City's games this week, helping the Mighty Oaks to a 3-1 record and a conference series win over WVU Tech. The outfielder logged five hits in ten at-bats, driving in five runs and scoring two more. He also drew three walks, finishing the week with a .571 on base percentage.

Pitcher of the Week
Gehrig Tenhumberg, Oakland City | Sr. - Pitcher - Evansville, Indiana
Tenhumberg toed the rubber for five innings on Saturday in Oakland City's victory over WVU Tech, and shut down the Golden Bears. The righty allowed just one run on two hits over his five innings of work, striking out six hitters and walking just two as he picked up the win on the road.

Softball Players of the Week

Player of the Week
Tenley Gilbert, Midway | Sr. - Infielder - Cerulean, Kentucky
Gilbert had a great week at the plate, hitting .643 with a .688 on-base percentage while also recording multiple hits in all four Midway games. Went 4-7 in two games against No. 4 Cumberlands, and hit safely in five of her seven at-bats in a conference doubleheader against Oakland City on Tuesday.

Pitcher of the Week
Hannah Nunemaker, IU Southeast | Sr. - Pitcher - Georgetown, Indiana
Nunemaker allowed just one baserunner in a near-perfect game effort against Brescia. An infield hit in the first inning was the only batter that reached base in a seven inning complete game shutout for Nunemaker, leading the Grenadiers to a 3-0 victory over the Bearcats on Tuesday.

Tennis Players of the Week

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Alejo Chlpac, Oakland City | Fr. - Buenos Aires, Argentina
Freshman Alejo Chlpac claimed his first victory after finally getting cleared to play. He dominated a ranked opponent helping the Oaks move to 10-3 on the year, beating their 4th ranked opponent of the season. Chlpac won at the third singles spot in straight sets, and added a doubles win over (RV) Marian.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Lexi Swauger, IU East| So. - Greenfield, Indiana
Swauger won both of her singles matches this past week, picking up wins over players from IU Kokomo and Franklin. The sophomore won 6-2, 6-0 at the fifth flight against IU Kokomo, then earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the third flight in a non-conference effort against Franklin.

Outdoor Track Athletes of the Week

Male Track Athlete of the Week
Darrius Megnin, St. Mary-of-the-Woods | Fr. - Corydon, Indiana
Darrius Megnin continued his stellar outdoor season with a victory in the 400 meter hurdles defeating a pair of NCAA Division I athletes. Megnin's time of 55.84 seconds shaves a couple hundredths of a second off his school record set last Saturday at the Pacesetter Invitational.

Male Field Athlete of the Week 
Alan Austin, Shawnee State | So. - Piketon, Ohio
For the fourth consecutive week to begin the outdoor track and field season, Shawnee State's Alan Austin posted a NAIA National 'B' Standard throw as Austin's 51.29 meter mark in the discus placed Austin second, ahead of seven NCAA Division I throwers and four NCAA Division II throwers -- as only Owen Wendl, a junior from Akron, beat Austin in the event. Austin also finished inside the top-10 overall in the shot put, amassing a 47-foot, six-and-three-quarter inch mark in that event.

Female Track Athlete of the Week
Eleanor Hasenour, IU East | Huntingburg, Indiana
Hasenour led the way in the race walk at the Indiana Tech Opener, crossing the finish line first with a time of 29:51.31. Hasenour's time for the Red Wolves was good enough to hit the NAIA's "B" standard in the event, one of six walkers in the River States Conference to hit that mark this season.

Female Field Athlete of the Week
Sydney Duncan, IU Kokomo | So. - Anderson, Indiana
Duncan led the Cougars in Michigan once again, this time punching her ticket to the Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Discus (Invitational) with an NAIA "B" standard performance, also winning the Shot Put (Invitational). Shot Put was held Friday, and Duncan took care of business as she has done all indoor/outdoor season. She won the event with a mark of 15.73 meters, then carried that momentum over to Discus on Saturday, where she finished third with a "B" standard throw of 47.19 meters. 

Golf Players of the Week

Male Player of the Week
Ross Ferrell, Shawnee State | Jr. - Tipp City, Ohio
Ross Ferrell shot his best career stroke total and matched the lowest score of all competitors on Day 2 of the UPike Invitational, finishing in a tie for third in the event. The junior matched the second-best score on par 3s and par 5s for the tournament, tied for fourth in total birdies in the two-day event and finished tied for seventh in pars. Ferrell posted a two-day 150 -- just one stroke back of a runner-up finish in the tournament.

Female Player of the Week
Maryssa Phillips | Jr. - Lexington, Kentucky
Phillips tied for the top score in a highly competitive field at the Northeast Tennessee Spring Shootout, losing medalist honors via a scorecard tiebreaker. The junior led all players in the second round with a two-over par 74 at the Johnson City Golf Club in Tennessee.
