OXFORD, Ohio- The River States Conference is pleased to announce the selection of Kentucky Christian University soccer player Gage Bowling as the 2025-26 Bill Melton Male Champion of Character recipient.

The RSC Bill Melton Champion of Character Award annually recognizes student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics and the embodiment of the NAIA Champions of Character values. The award is named for former RSC (then called KIAC) Commissioner Bill Melton. It promotes and recognizes the core values of the NAIA Champions of Character program: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership and Sportsmanship.

Nominated by their institution, candidates must be at least a junior with a 3.0+ GPA. Other considerations for the award are campus and community leadership, embracing the five core values and athletic achievement. The award was established in 2015-16, and the honoree is selected after a vote of the River States Conference's athletic directors.

In submitting Bowling for the award, Kentucky Christian men's soccer coach Jeremy Miller lauded Bowling's leadership skills, stating he leads in a way that yields respect over recognition.

"Gage does not seek recognition for what he does; he serves because he genuinely cares about people," Miller said. "He is dependable, compassionate, and willing to do whatever is needed to help others succeed; his faith guides the way he lives, and his actions consistently reflect the values this award is meant to honor."

Nominees for the Melton Award are also asked to submit an essay touching on the NAIA's five core character values. In his essay, Bowling touches on the responsibilities of being KCU's captain, and how he instills the NAIA's core character values in his stewardship.

"I feel as a captain I attempt to lead selflessly; I lead not by fear but love and making sure teammates are heard and have input on decisions," Bowling wrote. "It has been my mission to unify the team as a family."
