Oakland City Women's Soccer Wins First RSC Title

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- Macey Woolcock's first year at Oakland City was a historic one.

The England native led the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University to a remarkable turnaround season, led the conference in scoring, and earned River States Conference Player of the Year honors for her efforts.

But somehow, the junior found another gear in the postseason, and came through for Oakland City when it mattered most.

After scoring the game-winner in 74th minute of Saturday's semifinal against WVU Tech, Woolcock struck again in Wednesday night's River States Conference championship game, scoring the lone goal in the 25th minute of Oakland City's 1-0 victory over IU East in Evansville. The win gives Oakland City their first ever women's soccer championship in the River States Conference, and sends the Mighty Oaks to the NAIA Women's Soccer Tournament for the first time in program history.

Woolcock's winner came in the early stages of the match, and came on an assist from Camilla Bedin. On a cool and rainy night in Evansville, the Mighty Oaks were able to make that goal hold up. The visiting Red Wolves, in the final after an upset of Rio Grande in the semis, got two shots on goal in the second half in the 54th and 79th minutes, but both were turned away by OCU goalkeeper Yaiza Ramos. On the other end of the field, IU East goalkeeper Kylie O'Leary was also able to turn away three shots, keeping the Red Wolves in the match for all 90 minutes.

Oakland City's victory sends the Mighty Oaks to the national tournament for the first time in school history as the lone automatic qualifier from the River States Conference. The RSC champions will have to wait until the weekend to find out their fate, with the national tournament bracket unveiled Saturday by the national office in Kansas City. The women's soccer tournament consists of 40 teams, with 16 host sites. The winners from the 16 host sites will advance to the final site in Pensacola, Florida during the first week of December.
