Oakland City Women's Soccer Goes Back-to-Back as RSC Champs

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- Two popular sports cliches come to remind in regards to the Oakland City University women's soccer program.

Number one - it's harder to repeat as champions than it is to win the first time.

Number two - if you can't score, you can't win.

For Oakland City, the second cliche outweighed the first.

The Mighty Oaks finished off their second straight undefeated run through the River States Conference Wednesday night, winning the RSC Women's Soccer Tournament courtesy of a 2-0 victory over the Golden Bears of WVU Tech at the Goebel Soccer Complex in Evansville. The victory was the seventh consecutive shutout posted the Mighty Oaks, who have not allowed a goal in over a month.

For the first 45 minutes of Wednesday's contest, the Golden Bears were able to keep the Mighty Oaks out of the back of the net. Despite an 8-1 edge in shots for Oakland City, WVU Tech goalkeeper Sandra Garcia Quilez made four saves to get the match to the halftime break scoreless.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Oakland City changed that. A foul right outside the box set up a free kick for Alex Ortiz, who buried her shot above the hands of a leaping goalkeeper to give the Mighty Oaks the lead in the 48th minute.

After 45 scoreless minutes, the Mighty Oaks waited just over three more minutes for the second and final goal of the night. A scramble outside of the box found the foot of Sofia Lacey, who unleashed a rocket into the top of the net for her first goal of the season.

Those two goals would be all the Mighty Oaks needed, as Oakland City's suffocating defense allowed just one shot on goal from the Golden Bears in the second half, an attempt in the 68th minute from conference Newcomer of the Year Rocio Gutierrez.

Oakland City will return to the NAIA Tournament for the second year in a row as the River States Conference's automatic qualifier. The Mighty Oaks, in their second-ever trip, will look for their first-ever national tournament win following a defeat at the hands of Saint Ambrose University in the opening round last year in Spring Arbor, Michigan.

The NAIA Women’s Soccer Selection Show will go live on Friday, November 14, at 7 p.m. eastern, when the full field for the 2025 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship will be unveiled.
