Oakland City Continues Reign, Wins Fourth Straight Women's Tennis Title

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Oakland City University women's tennis program capped a perfect 2026 conference season on Saturday morning, winning their fourth consecutive River States Conference Women's Tennis Tournament with a 4-0 sweep of second-seeded Midway University. The final was held on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. 

The Mighty Oaks, who moved to 16-4 overall with the win, did not drop a single point in conference play this season, winning each of their eight matches against conference opponents by a shutout score.

The dynasty of the River States Conference needed just 22 minutes to claim the doubles point Saturday morning. In quick succession, the second flight team of Maria Trembach and Tiana Sparks, as well as the third flight team of Melissa de Jong and Fabienne Nowak, both concluded 6-0 sweeps of their matches to give the doubles point to the Mighty Oaks. The match at the first flight was nearly finished as well, with Oakland City's top team of Silvia Fernandez de la Pradilla and Berta Ladaga Auge leading 5-1.

Melissa de Jong gave the Mighty Oaks their first singles point, needing just 40 minutes to pick up a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Midway's Caitlin Wright at the fifth flight. Seven minutes later, the Mighty Oaks moved within a point of the title, thanks to a 6-0, 6-1 victory by Tiana Sparks at the fourth flight. The clinching point was provided by Juliana Puente, who defeated Midway's Haley Thompson by an 6-1, 6-1 score at the sixth flight. 

The Mighty Oaks also led at the second and third flights at time of clinch, while Midway's Alicia Sanglas Sanglas and Oakland City's Silvia Fernandez de la Pradilla were tied 5-5 in the first set at the top flight. 

Oakland City advanced to Saturday's final with a 4-0 victory over fourth-seeded Brescia. Midway's path to the final featured a 5-1 victory over third-seeded IU Southeast, with two clinching points occurring simultaneously. In the quarterfinals, Brescia advanced with a 4-0 win over IU East, and IU Southeast wrapped up the day's action on Thursday with a 4-0 win over IU Kokomo. The first two days of competition were held at the Wesselman Tennis Center in Evansville, with action shifting to Southern Indiana on Saturday.

The Mighty Oaks will head to the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship for the fourth consecutive year, with action set to begin in Mobile, Alabama on May 12. The Mighty Oaks, who faced eight teams currently either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll and defeated three of them, are in search for their first-ever national tournament victory.
